The Knitting and Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace is the event of the year for all textile craft enthusiasts. The Palace itself is a stunning venue with a rich airy interior and superb views of the London skyline from the outside balconies. The floor space is huge and comfortably accommodates 400 friendly exhibitors selling everything from yarn and accessories, fabric, sewing machines, embroidery threads, specialist magazines and patterns. There was temptation and inspiration wherever you looked with awesome variety. Apart from the familiar names and known craft suppliers there are also many small independent exhibitors offering more unusual specialist and quirky products. There really is something for everyone.
Throughout the period of the show, there are nearly 200 learning workshops offering everything from making a knitted Christmas Pudding to Pattern Alterations for Larger Busts! These are more than taster sessions offered at other shows – these are serious get down to achieve something sessions and are very popular – some topics are sold out weeks in advance.
There is plenty of opportunity to sit down and listen to free craft demonstrations dotted around, refreshment outlets or ‘Knit and Natter’ open seating areas.
If that wasn’t enough there are exhibition galleries to wander around and admire the work of some of the UK’s best known textile artists showcasing their work, 3D crochet, surface embroidery, patchwork, quilting and other intricate craft work. The experts are happy to talk about their crafts, give advice and encourage anyone who takes a passing interest!
The conclusion is a satisfied weary visitor struggling to get home with bags of bargain wool, magazines to peruse with a cup of tea and lots of exciting projects lined up for the dark winter evenings.
