Formosa : Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan at Sadler’s Wells – 9th to 12th May 2018

The internationally acclaimed Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan returns to Sadler’s Wells from 9 – 12 May 2018 with the UK Premiere of Formosa. Choreographer and writer Lin Hwai-min’s new work takes inspiration from the legendary words of the Portuguese sailors in the 16th century, as they spotted the verdant land that would one day be known as Taiwan: “Formosa!” (“Beautiful!”).

With music by award-winning Taiwanese indigenous singer Sangpuy and projection designs made up of Chinese characters, the lines between tribal rituals and the bustle of the city begin to blur. Using gesture, script, music and other elements of the island, Lin explores how writing has the power to distort memories and erase history.

DFS : Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud at Sadler’s Wells – 23rd and 24th April 2018

The award-winning duo Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud have collaborated since 2005 and have created works for Lyon Opera Ballet and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. They present work for the first time on the Sadler’s Wells stage, bringing their latest collaboration DFS to London.

For DFS Bengolea travelled to Jamaica to immerse herself in Kingston’s defiant dance scene, while Chaignaud pursued the study of traditional medieval vocal polyphony, focusing especially on the works by medieval French poet and composer Guillaume de Machaut. Bringing their research together, the choreographers invited three ballerinas and dancehall specialists to join them in the exploration of song and dance.

Free post-show talk: Monday 23 April; Alistair Spalding in conversation with Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud.

Sadler’s Wells Family Weekend 2018: balletLORENT – Rumpelstiltskin from 30th to 31st March 2018

balletLORENT returns to Sadler’s Wells with another fantastical dance-theatre fairy-tale adaptation for Sadler’s Wells Family Weekend, presenting Rumpelstiltskin.

Family Weekend is an annual jam-packed festival that has run since 2008, offering entertainment for all ages including performances, workshops, arts and crafts activities and games. A performance in the Lilian Baylis Studio and details of the workshops are to be announced.

Directed by Liv Lorent and retold by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, Rumpelstiltskin is the story of the outsider, shunned for being different. Set in a world of spinning wheels, kings and queens, this is a tale of love, loss and magic powers.

The production has a score by Doctor Who composer Murray Gold, costumes designed by Michele Clapton (Game of Thrones), and narration by actor Ben Crompton.

Joining the professional cast are Islington school children from Hugh Myddelton and Rotherfield primary schools, alongside older adults from local community groups.

Rumpelstiltskin is the third instalment of balletLORENT’s fairy tale trilogy, following the company’s acclaimed interpretations of Rapunzel and Snow White. Rumpelstiltskin comes to Sadler’s Wells as part of a UK tour that includes dates in Pitlochry, Huddersfield, Salford, Darlington, Aberdeen, Inverness and Doncaster.

Requiem pour L. : Fabrizio Cassol and Alain Platel at Sadler’s Wells – 20th and 21st March 2018

Alain Platel, the trailblazing founder and director of Belgian contemporary dance collective les ballets C de la B, returns to Sadler’s Wells, alongside regular collaborator, composer and musical director Fabrizio Cassol, for the UK premiere of Requiem pour L.

Cassol and Platel join forces once again in a work inspired by Mozart’s final and unfinished work. With 14 musicians from across Europe and Africa, Cassol reconstructs the Requiem using diverse musical influences from popular African music to jazz and opera. Platel uses the imagery that Mozart’s music conjures up, from the requiem mass to the mass grave into which Mozart himself was dumped, to build a visual world of death and ritual for the musicians and dancers to inhabit.

Pre-show Director’s Conversation: Tuesday 20 March at 6pm, Alistair Spalding in conversation with Fabrizio Cassol and Alain Platel; £7.50 or £4 in conjunction with a ticket to see the production that evening.

Korper: Sasha Waltz and Guests at Sadler’s Wells – 1st to 3rd March 2018

Renowned contemporary choreographer Sasha Waltz is celebrated for her compelling imagery and body-focused choreography. Taking the body itself as her subject in Körper, Waltz combines clinical analysis and fantastical illusions as 13 dancers meld together to form strange chimerical creatures and squirm behind glass like scientific specimens, in a series of living tableaux.

Körper, meaning body in German, engages dancers in a variety of movements. Linking architecture and body, the production asks what is the body and how is it constructed. The dance analyses morality, the quest for immortality, and investigates reproduction in the age of genetic manipulation. Körper received its World Premiere in Berlin in 2000 and had its UK Premiere in the same year.

The development of innovative forms of performance and creation has become the most significant focus of the work of Sasha Waltz & Guests. The company was named an official Cultural ambassador of the European Union for the 2013 anniversary year. The company also received the 2014 George Tabori prize for exceptional artistic achievements over the last 20 years.

Sutra: Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Antony Gormley and monks from the Shaolin Temple at Sadler’s Wells – 26th to 28th March 2018

One of Sadler’s Wells’ most successful productions, Sutra returns to London from Monday 26 to Wednesday 28 March to celebrate its 10th anniversary after touring around the globe to sell-out audiences. This award-winning collaboration between choreographer and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, sculptor Antony Gormley and 19 Buddhist monks from the Shaolin Temple in China is one of Sadler’s Wells’ longest running and most successful productions.

Since its first sell-out performances at Sadler’s Wells in London in May 2008, Sutra has toured to 66 cities in 33 countries across the world. The production plays its 200th performance when it returns to the Sadler’s Wells stage. With Gormley’s striking set of 21 wooden boxes and Polish composer Szymon Brzóska’s specially commissioned score performed live, Sutra is a breath-taking spectacle of athleticism that explores the philosophy and faith behind the Shaolin tradition and its relationship with kung fu within a contemporary context.

Sutra is accompanied by a live, specially commissioned score for five musicians, including piano, percussion and strings by Szymon Brzóska.
