Cirque Éloize: Saloon at The Peacock Theatre – 4th to 21st October 2017

Head to the Wild West with world leaders in contemporary circus, Cirque Éloize in the UK Premiere of their new show. Inspired by the rich legacy of the Wild West, Saloon showcases the company’s trademark blend of spectacular circus and drama to create the colourful characters swinging through the saloon doors. The production comes to Sadler’s Wells’ West End venue, The Peacock, 4 – 21 October 2017.

Directed by Emmanuel Guillaume, Saloon thrums with infectious energy and phenomenal physical feats as the 11 extraordinary cast members perform a theatrical thrill-ride. With a soundtrack of non-stop live folk and country music, from Patsy Cline to Johnny Cash, and original compositions by celebrated Canadian composer Éloi Painchaud, the production is a foot-stomping, lasso-throwing night of entertainment.

This creation marks the first collaboration between Cirque Éloize and the show’s musical director, Eloi Painchaud. Staying close to the musical roots of the director, Saloon mixes country extracts with more festive, folk-inspired compositions. There are three musicians and singers on stage, and all the artists sing or play instruments.

Cirque Éloize has become a world leader in contemporary circus since the company was founded in 1993 by artistic director, and Eloi’s cousin, Jeannot Painchaud. The company specializes in creating shows that fuse circus arts with music, theatre and dance.

Dorrance Dance – ETM: Double Down at Sadler’s Wells from 12th to 15th July 2017

Groundbreaking tap dancer and choreographer Michelle Dorrance, winner of a 2015 MacArthur Fellowship and “one of the most imaginative tap choreographers working today” (The New Yorker), brings her company Dorrance Dance to Sadler’s Wells this summer with the UK Premiere of ETM: Double Down opening on Wednesday 12 July.

Dorrance brings tap into the age of electronic music with collaborator Nicholas Van Young whose electronic tap boards make the stage talk back, as every step, swipe, and scrape sets off an element of sound, building musical loops, turning the stage into a musical instrument in its own right. With Afro-Brazilian, indie-pop, and even a bit of Adele triggered by the eight dancers’ footwork, ETM: Double Down takes the first American dance form to a new level.

nicht schlafen: Alain Platel and les ballets C de la B at Sadler’s Wells – 30th June and 1st July 2017

Alain Platel, the acclaimed founder and director of Belgian contemporary dance collective les ballets C de la B, returns to Sadler’s Wells for the London premiere of a new work, nicht schlafen. The work is inspired by the music of Gustav Mahler and the time the composer lived in, Platel explores parallels between the music and the troubled early years of the 20th century in Europe.

Platel collaborates with Steven Prengels, who uses African polyphonic chants, cowbells and the sounds of sleeping animals to create a soundscape, and visual artist Berlinde De Bruyckere, whose sculptures of dead horses piled up in a jumbled heap are placed around the stage.

Founded in Ghent, Belgium in 1984, les ballets C de la B is one of the most influential performing arts companies in Europe, Van Laecke, Platel and Prengels last worked together on Gardenia, their Olivier Award nominated production performed by lip-synching retired drag queens.
