Sutra: Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Antony Gormley and monks from the Shaolin Temple at Sadler’s Wells – 26th to 28th March 2018

One of Sadler’s Wells’ most successful productions, Sutra returns to London from Monday 26 to Wednesday 28 March to celebrate its 10th anniversary after touring around the globe to sell-out audiences. This award-winning collaboration between choreographer and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, sculptor Antony Gormley and 19 Buddhist monks from the Shaolin Temple in China is one of Sadler’s Wells’ longest running and most successful productions.

Since its first sell-out performances at Sadler’s Wells in London in May 2008, Sutra has toured to 66 cities in 33 countries across the world. The production plays its 200th performance when it returns to the Sadler’s Wells stage. With Gormley’s striking set of 21 wooden boxes and Polish composer Szymon Brzóska’s specially commissioned score performed live, Sutra is a breath-taking spectacle of athleticism that explores the philosophy and faith behind the Shaolin tradition and its relationship with kung fu within a contemporary context.

Sutra is accompanied by a live, specially commissioned score for five musicians, including piano, percussion and strings by Szymon Brzóska.

Viktor: Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch at Sadler’s Wells – 8th to 11th February 2018

Viktor, created by the imaginative and inventive Pina Bausch, returns to Sadler’s Wells from Thursday 8th – Sunday 11th February 2018. The piece, an international co-production with Teatro Argentino and the City of Rome, is performed by the legendary Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.

In 1986, the city of Rome invited Pina Bausch and her company to make a piece inspired by the Eternal City. Viktor turned out to be the first of Pina Bausch’s epic travelogues, a series which took her company around the world for inspiration-gathering residencies. Living in each city for a period of time, her renowned company would then return to Wuppertal to create a new work inspired by their visit. The piece has previously been performed at Sadler’s Wells in 1999 and again as part of the World Cities series in 2012.

Deep in the muddy depths of a grave which is still being dug, a corpse couple are united in a macabre marriage and a woman is transformed into a water fountain. Viktor is set to music which spans centuries and continents: folk music from Italy, waltzes from Russia and dance music from the Middle Ages to the 1930s. Pina Bausch directed and choreographed Viktor, with set designs by Peter Pabst, costume designs by Marion Cito and music in collaboration with Matthias Burkert.

Cirque Éloize: Saloon at The Peacock Theatre – 4th to 21st October 2017

Head to the Wild West with world leaders in contemporary circus, Cirque Éloize in the UK Premiere of their new show. Inspired by the rich legacy of the Wild West, Saloon showcases the company’s trademark blend of spectacular circus and drama to create the colourful characters swinging through the saloon doors. The production comes to Sadler’s Wells’ West End venue, The Peacock, 4 – 21 October 2017.

Directed by Emmanuel Guillaume, Saloon thrums with infectious energy and phenomenal physical feats as the 11 extraordinary cast members perform a theatrical thrill-ride. With a soundtrack of non-stop live folk and country music, from Patsy Cline to Johnny Cash, and original compositions by celebrated Canadian composer Éloi Painchaud, the production is a foot-stomping, lasso-throwing night of entertainment.

This creation marks the first collaboration between Cirque Éloize and the show’s musical director, Eloi Painchaud. Staying close to the musical roots of the director, Saloon mixes country extracts with more festive, folk-inspired compositions. There are three musicians and singers on stage, and all the artists sing or play instruments.

Cirque Éloize has become a world leader in contemporary circus since the company was founded in 1993 by artistic director, and Eloi’s cousin, Jeannot Painchaud. The company specializes in creating shows that fuse circus arts with music, theatre and dance.

New York based dancer and choreographer Kyle Abraham combines balletic and hip hop movements in his trademark, interdisciplinary style, which he typically refers to as a ‘post-modern gumbo’ He has created work for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and New York City Ballet’s Wendy Whelan, as well as for his own company Abraham.In.Motion, who perform at Sadler’s Wells for the first time on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 November.
