The V&A presents one of the UK’s largest ever exhibitions on Winnie-the-Pooh, A.A. Milne and E.H. Shepard. The exhibition entitled Winnie-the-Pooh: Exploring a Classic explores the magical and whimsical world of Winnie-the-Pooh who is one of the most popular children’s characters of all time.

The exhibition spans more than 90 years of  the bear’s history and features around 230 works from 1920 to the present day including original illustrations, manuscripts, proofs and early editions, letters, photographs, cartoons, ceramics and fashion.

For the first time, the pencil sketch and the pen and ink drawing of the celebrated ‘Poohsticks’ illustration featuring Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet and Christopher Robin will go on display side by side; There will also be video and audio clips, including a 1929 recording of Milne reading Winnie-the-Pooh.

Winnie the Pooh and his friends: Christopher Robin, Eeyore, Kanga and Roo, Owl, Piglet, Rabbit and Tigger feature in a large-scale, immersive family section reimagining scenes from the most famous stories such as Poohsticks Bridge, the Bee Tree and Eeyore’s house.

There are also a number of  interactive elements to entertain younger visitors, including dressing up areas, storytelling trees and a ‘picnic’ drawing table.

Part of the exhibition centres on the working relationship between A.A Milne and E.H. Shepard and how their creative collaboration developed which resulted in a humorous interplay between text and illustration.

The large number of original pencil and pen and ink drawings for Winnie-the-Pooh and House at Pooh Corner illustrate how the various characters changed over time.

This attractive, enjoyable and child friendly exhibition works on a number of levels, the large-scale scenes and interactive elements allow you to enter the magical world of Winnie-the-Pooh and friends, however equally fascinating are the drawings, cartoons and other items that gives insight into the creative process behind the stories and how the creations became a mini industry with numerous products produced over a vast range of media.
