Goodwood is one of the Britain’s most attractive and prestigious racecourses located high above the Sussex Downs with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and the nearby coast.

The racecourse has a long and illustrious history and has been under the control of the family members of the Duke of Richmond, since 1802. It was the third Duke of Richmond in 1802 who established a course on the Goodwood Estate known as “The Harroway”. The course was created to enable the officers of the Sussex Militia to hold their annual races.

Goodwood is one of Britain’s great estates and historic homes and in 1814 was the location of the first Festival Meeting which became known as “Glorious Goodwood”, since then it has become a important date in the British racing and social calendar. The Glorious Goodwood meeting hosts a number of top class races including two Group one races, the Sussex Stakes and the Nassau Stakes.

The racecourse is one of the most unusual in Britain with an imposing setting near a Iron Age hill fort. The course is not a continuous circuit like most British racecourses but has starts on a right handed loop for longer distance races before entering the undulating straight up to the finish line. The unusual nature of the course makes for exciting racing with the lead often changing in the course of the race.

The Richmond Enclosure is the main and most prestigious stand which is available to everyone except during the Festival Meeting when it is reserved for members, their guests and corporate clients. Next to the Richmond Enclosure is The Gordon Enclosure which gives access to the Parade Ring, and Winners’ Enclosure. The Lennox Enclosure offers a less expensive enclosure with trackside viewing on the home straight. There are plenty of food and drink options within all the enclosures.

Goodwood racecourse is part of the Goodwood Estate and is located five miles north of Chichester which is an attractive destination from London and takes around an hour and half on the regular train service, from the station a free coach (except at the festival) will take you to the course or plenty of taxis will be available.

By Road from London

Follow the A3 (Junction 10 on the M25) south towards Guildford. About 3 miles past Guildford, at the Milford turning, take the A283 to Petworth, then the A285 to Chichester for about 6 miles.

By Rail

There is a regular service from London Victoria to Chichester (1hour, 40 minutes), plus the coastal service from Brighton and Portsmouth. Buses or taxis are available at Chichester Station.
