Royal Opera House announce exciting 2016/17 Opera and Ballet season

The Royal Opera House have announced the programmes for the 2016/17 Opera and Ballet season which combine some old favourites with some exciting new works. Alex Beard (Chief Executive), Kasper Holten (Director of Opera ), Antonio Pappano (Musical Director)  and Kevin O’ Hare ( Director, The Royal Ballet) took to the stage in the Royal Opera House to give information about the new season that will feature leading tenor, Jonas Kaufmann as Otello, Bryn Terfel as Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger and Renee Fleming as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier.

The Royal Ballet season will offer Four World Premieres which will include a new one-act ballet from Wayne McGregor to a commissioned score by Steve Reich, a new one-act ballet from Liam Scarlett, the first UK ballet commission for Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite who makes her Royal Opera House debut with a one-act ballet and a new production of Philip Glass dance opera Les Enfants Terribles choreographed by Javier De Frutos at the Barbican.

Wayne McGregor’s will celebrate his 10th Anniversary Celebrations as Resident Choreographer with Chroma to be performed with members of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater alongside dancers from The Royal Ballet and a  first revival of award-winning Woolf Works and Carbon Life with music by Mark Ronson.

Ballets to be performed over the season include Kenneth MacMillan’s Anastasia, Mayerling, The Sleeping Beauty and the ever popular The Nutcracker. La Fille mal gardée, The Dream, Symphonic Variations and Marguerite and Armand by Frederick Ashton and revivals of Christopher Wheeldon’s one-act ballets After the Rain and Strapless offer considerable variety and the Royal Ballet will also present the first revival of David Dawson’s The Human Seasons, The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude by William Forsythe, last performed by The Royal Ballet in 2002 and George Balanchine’s three-act ballet Jewels and his Tarantella pas de deux.

Antonio Pappano

The Royal Opera have confirmed that the popular Antonio Pappano has renewed his contract as Music Director of The Royal Opera until 2020 and he will conduct three new productions – Norma, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Otello – as well as revivals of Manon Lescaut and Madama Butterfly.

The Royal Opera presents the UK premiere of Thomas Adès’s new opera, The Exterminating Angel as well as seven new productions at the Royal Opera House (Norma, Così fan tutte, The Nose, Der Rosenkavalier, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, The Exterminating Angel, and Otello) with two directors new to Covent Garden (Jan Philipp Gloger and Barrie Kosky), as well as new productions from Àlex Ollé, Robert Carsen, Kasper Holten, Tom Cairns and Keith Warner.

Manon Lescaut, Written on Skin, Il trovatore and Adriana Lecouvreur return for their first revivals and André Tchaikowsky’s The Merchant of Venice receives its London premiere in a production by WNO directed by Keith Warner at the end of the 2016/17 Season.

The Royal Opera House move into Live Cinema and digital forms will continue with Six operas to be screened in the Royal Opera House Live Cinema Season and BBC Radio 3 will broadcast eight productions during the 2016/17 Season. During the season, the Royal Opera House will stream a selection of productions live online via its YouTube channel starting with The Nose on Wednesday 9 November.

Determined to show The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera in ways never seen before, The Royal Opera House will offer live backstage footage of The Royal Ballet on World Ballet Day, 360˚ views of the auditorium featuring GoPro footage of the lead players in Guide to the Orchestra and The Nutcracker 360˚ , a 360˚ film of the 2015 production of the ballet from the viewpoint of one of the dancers.

Duran Duran at the O2 Arena – 8th December 2015

Multi-platinum superstars Duran Duran are returning on the 8th December to coincide with new album Paper Gods. Multi platinum artist, Seal announced as special guest on Duran Duran’s UK tour. The Bloom Twins to open on all dates.

Singer Simon Le Bon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor, and drummer Roger Taylor recorded the album in London with producers Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson, Josh Blair, and Mr Hudson.

The record features special guests Janelle Monáe (on the first single “Pressure Off”), former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante, Canadian Juno-Award winning singer Kiesza, British singer/songwriter Mr Hudson, violinist Davidé Rossi and actress Lindsay Lohan.

Alongside news of the new album, Duran Duran have also announced that they will perform a series of summer festivals, as well as several shows in the U.S. in September and October, followed by a UK arena tour that kicks off in late November.
