Maureen Lipman (Oklahoma, Outside Edge, See How They Run) and Olivier-award winning Katie Brayben (Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, King Charles III, American Psycho) will lead the cast in Charlotte Keatley’s My Mother Said I Never Should.

They will be joined by Caroline Faber (The Taming of the Shrew, The Heiress, Hangover Square) and Serena Manteghi (The Railway Children).

Presented by Tiny Fires this is the first London revival of the play in over 25 years.

“I don’t know if you’ll ever love me as much as I love you but one day you’ll understand why I’ve done this to you.”

Doris, born illegitimate in 1900, exchanges her budding teaching career for marriage and motherhood. When the war is over her daughter Margaret marries an American and has Jackie, who becomes an archetypal 60s rebel. When Jackie can’t face being a single mother it is decided that baby Rosie will be brought up as Margaret’s own. That’s the plan anyway.

Keatley’s award-winning play is a moving exploration of the relationships between mothers and daughters and the consequences of breaking the most sacred taboo of motherhood.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical at the Aldwych Theatre – 10th Feb to 13th Jun 2015

Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent.
She fought her way into the record industry as a teenager and sold her first hit, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, when she was just seventeen. By the time she was twenty she was writing number ones for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll, including the Drifters, the Shirelles, Aretha Franklin and the Monkees.

But her greatest challenge was to find her own voice and finally step into the spotlight.
BEAUTIFUL is the untold story of Carole King’s journey from school girl to superstar; from her relationship with husband and song-writing partner Gerry Goffin, their close friendship and playful rivalry with fellow song-writing duo Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, to her remarkable rise to stardom.

Along the way, she became one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history and wrote the soundtrack to a generation.
Cast
Katie Brayben,  Alan Morrissey, Lorna Want, Ian Mc Intosh, Glynis Barber, Gary Trainor.
