Review – ITU World Triathlon London in Hyde Park – 30th May 2015

DSCN4513

ITU World Triathlon London, Hyde Park

The Vitality World Triathlon London is one of the world’s leading triathlon events and one of only two legacy events from the 2012 Olympic games still open to public participation.

DSCN4496

On the first day of the  event, it was the turn of the non elite athletes from all around the world to swim, bike and run on the iconic Hyde Park course in pursuit of their own personal glory.

DSCN4508

Distances start from Tri It (400m swim, 15km bike, 2.5km run) and go all the way up to Olympic (1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run), meaning that individuals of all fitness levels can take part and challenge themselves on the course before crossing the finish line in front of a packed grandstand.

RSCN4560

The swim is in the Serpentine in the middle of  Hyde Park before the bike ride and the run, with so many athletes taking part it is a bit of a logistics nightmare but to the credit of the organisers and volunteers all seem to go smoothly.

DSCN4535

With the up to 5000 participants being supported by family and friends adding to the large crowd , the first day of the event was well supported all over the park .

DSCN4530

There are many vantage spots for spectators to watch the action around the course which are free to use but if  if  you would like seats in the grandstand , tickets can be bought  to secure the best seats.

DSCN4559

Tomorrow afternoon is when the world’s best triathletes go head to head in a  ITU World Triathlon Series race on the  London 2012 Olympic course in the heart of Hyde Park. With Rio 2016 qualification points at stake and plenty of British interest with the Brownlee brothers, it’s represents a wonderful showcase of elite level triathlon racing.

The Queen’s Birthday Gun Salutes in Hyde Park and the Tower of London – 21st April 2015

The Queen’s Birthday Gun Salutes in Hyde Park and the Tower of London – 21st April 2015

For many London visitors, there is an element of confusion about the Queen’s Birthday, unlike most people she has two. The Queen celebrates her actual birthday on 21st April when there are no official celebrations, but the occasion is marked publicly by gun salutes in central London. The 41-gun Queen’s Birthday Gun Salute in Green Park or Hyde Park  takes place at midday, a 21-gun salute in Windsor Great Park and a 62-gun salute at the Tower Of London at 1pm.

The salute is open for anyone to watch as the King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery ride into Green Park or Hyde Park at around 11.45am and then fire the first round at midday. The Queen’s official birthday takes place in June which is marked by Trooping the Colour.

Generally in London, Gun salutes are mark of respect and usually fired in Hyde Park by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery and at The Tower of London however, on State Visits, at the State Opening of Parliament and for The Queen’s Birthday Parade, The Green Park is used instead of Hyde Park.

The number of rounds fired in a Royal salute depends on the place and occasion. The basic Royal salute is 21 rounds. In Hyde Park an extra 20 rounds are added because it is a Royal Park. At the Tower of London 62 rounds are fired on Royal anniversaries (the basic 21, plus a further 20 because the Tower is a Royal Palace and Fortress, plus another 21 ‘for the City of London’) and 41 on other occasions.

Review : Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park – 21st Nov 2014 to 4th Jan 2015

DSCN8697

This year, we are having a sneak preview of one of London’s most popular winter events, the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland. Since the Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park  event started in 2007, it has attracted around 15 million visitors. It will be returning to the park on  21st November for six weeks of winter festivities with even more entertainment and new attractions than before.

DSCN8786

One of the reasons the event is so popular is there is free admission to the site and you only pay for the rides or attractions that you want to use. However, because of its popularity it does pay to book tickets for some of the bigger attractions especially Ice Skating, The Magical Ice Kingdom, the Giant Observation Wheel and Zippos Circus.

DSCN8717

The Magical Ice Kingdom has increased in size this year with even more  snow and ice sculptures. This year children and adults are invited to walk through the frozen forest and catch sight of the ice fairies, explore the world of frozen princesses, unicorns and the Snow Queen and discover Merlin. Visitors are invited to sit with the Knights of the Round Table and see the spectacular dragon and back by popular demand will be the castle’s ice slide and the ice thrones.

DSCN8789

The Lycamobile Ice Rink will return and once again be located around the picturesque Victorian Bandstand, on which there will be live music played throughout the day and night as skaters take to the ice for a spin. Stretching over 1,600m2 it is the UK’s largest outdoor ice rink. For those who want to gaze at the action from above, the  Giant Observation Wheel will illuminate the skyline.

DSCN8701

Other favourite attractions making a welcome return include Santa Land, for younger visitors where Father Christmas will be every day with his Elves and a sack of free gifts.

DSCN8796

For  Christmas shoppers, there will be over 200 chalets in the Angels Christmas & Yuletide Markets offering unusual and handmade gifts and crafts, including ceramics, candles, jewellery, wooden toys, nativity scenes and Christmas decorations.

DSCN8695

Following their sell-out run last year,  Zippos Circus returns with two very different shows – their  daytime show for all the family, the show will feature an amazing springboard act, clowns, aerialist, high-speed juggler and a  high wire act. The evening show features  Cirque Berserk – Mechanika a very contemporary circus  show for the older audience . This show will feature some of the most dangerous circus acts in the world, including the Globe of Death – a spectacle featuring three motorbikes riding together at up to 60mph in an unbelievably small steel globe.

This year Zippo’s Circus  will be performing in the Mega Dome, the newest and biggest circus venue in the UK standing over 65ft tall designed especially for Winter Wonderland.

DSCN8761
The popular Bavarian Village offers the traditional bratwurst, mulled wine and German Beer whilst hosting high quality live music throughout the day and evening. In addition there are a large number of  restaurants and bars available throughout the site. There is also a large number of rides both traditional and modern rides for adults and children of all ages.

DSCN8778

Winter Wonderland tends to covers all the bases and offers something for everyone, whether you like the more traditional approach or the more exciting rides and attractions. It is without doubt London’s premiere winter attraction and attracts considerable crowds at weekends and in the period just before Christmas.

Tickets are now on sale for the Ice Skating, The Magical Ice Kingdom, Giant Observation Wheel and Zippos Circus – Zippos Christmas Circus and Cirque Berserk.

Dates:   Friday 21st November 2014 – Sunday 4th January 2015 (closed Christmas day)
Times:   10am – 10pm daily (except 21st November – opens from 5pm)
Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is FREE to enter, there is no admission fee
