Requiem pour L. : Fabrizio Cassol and Alain Platel at Sadler’s Wells – 20th and 21st March 2018

Alain Platel, the trailblazing founder and director of Belgian contemporary dance collective les ballets C de la B, returns to Sadler’s Wells, alongside regular collaborator, composer and musical director Fabrizio Cassol, for the UK premiere of Requiem pour L.

Cassol and Platel join forces once again in a work inspired by Mozart’s final and unfinished work. With 14 musicians from across Europe and Africa, Cassol reconstructs the Requiem using diverse musical influences from popular African music to jazz and opera. Platel uses the imagery that Mozart’s music conjures up, from the requiem mass to the mass grave into which Mozart himself was dumped, to build a visual world of death and ritual for the musicians and dancers to inhabit.

Pre-show Director’s Conversation: Tuesday 20 March at 6pm, Alistair Spalding in conversation with Fabrizio Cassol and Alain Platel; £7.50 or £4 in conjunction with a ticket to see the production that evening.

nicht schlafen: Alain Platel and les ballets C de la B at Sadler’s Wells – 30th June and 1st July 2017

Alain Platel, the acclaimed founder and director of Belgian contemporary dance collective les ballets C de la B, returns to Sadler’s Wells for the London premiere of a new work, nicht schlafen. The work is inspired by the music of Gustav Mahler and the time the composer lived in, Platel explores parallels between the music and the troubled early years of the 20th century in Europe.

Platel collaborates with Steven Prengels, who uses African polyphonic chants, cowbells and the sounds of sleeping animals to create a soundscape, and visual artist Berlinde De Bruyckere, whose sculptures of dead horses piled up in a jumbled heap are placed around the stage.

Founded in Ghent, Belgium in 1984, les ballets C de la B is one of the most influential performing arts companies in Europe, Van Laecke, Platel and Prengels last worked together on Gardenia, their Olivier Award nominated production performed by lip-synching retired drag queens.

Alain Platel, Frank Van Laecke and Steven Prengels : En avant, marche! at Sadler’s Wells – 16th and 17th June 2016

frankel

Fusing music, dance, theatre and opera, En avant, marche! celebrates the marching band community surrounding a dying, yet larger-than-life, trombonist as he comes to terms with his lot and his demotion to cymbal player. A metaphor for society as a whole, the piece explores how musical arrangements and life are preserved through trial and error.

For this heart-warming and exuberant new production, four performers and seven musicians are joined on stage by London-based concert band, The Heroes Band, playing music by Gustav Holst, Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Strauss.

This highly theatrical, genre-defying show is presented by les ballets C de la B director Alain Platel alongside Frank Van Laecke and Steven Prengels – the trio behind the 2012 Olivier Award nominated Gardenia.
