The RHS are celebrating the arrival of autumn with the RHS Harvest Festival Show 2018. The show in RHS Lindley Hall is free to attend and showcases a host of seasonal talks, displays and plenty of competitions.
Walking into the show, visitors are faced with enormous pumpkins that have taken part in the biggest pumpkin competition. The winner has its winning rosette proudly on top.
The tables are fully laden with fruit and vegetables which are part of the RHS Autumn Fruit and Vegetable Competition. If you would like advice on growing fruit and vegetables, there is specialist advice from the RHS Fruit Group and National Vegetable Society.
The show is for all the family and there are displays from local schools that have been involved with the RHS Campaign for School Gardening.
Pennard Plants has interpreted the famous artwork ‘Cookmaid with Still Life of Vegetables and Fruit’ by Sir Nathanial Bacon as an interactive living artwork. During the show, artist Nneka Uzoigwe will paint a still life inspired by the installation from Pennard Plants and will be on hand to guide visitors through her own work.
Visitors can have their pictures taken in the artwork and vote for your favourite carved pumpkin.
The talks at the London shows are always popular and over the next two days, you can find out about Giant Pumpkin Growing Matt Oliver from RHS Garden Hyde Hall, Chillies for all Tastes by Joy Michaud from Sea Spring Seeds and Getting the best from your orchard Jack McCrickard, from The Orchard Project.
The show has a number of stalls where you can buy seeds, fruit and vegetables. The RHS Wisley Team have a display of different varieties of apples to taste and buy.
Although the RHS are reorganising their London shows, they always provide lots of ideas and entertainment if you are interested in all things horticultural. This free show is a perfect introduction to the delights of the RHS shows with plenty to enjoy for all ages.
