A Recital of Classical Ottoman Court Music at the Leighton House Museum – 11th July 2018

Baha Yetkin and Alexandros Koustas, experts in traditional Ottoman court music will provide Leighton House audiences with insights into the rich sounds of the Turkish Makam, which is found throughout folk and dance music; in court audiences as well as Mevlevi ceremonies.

The concert will take place in Leighton House Museum which is the former home of the Victorian artist Frederic, Lord Leighton. This remarkable building of the nineteenth century, contains a fascinating collection of paintings and sculpture by Leighton and his contemporaries.

Leighton was fascinated by the Middle East and his home with an extraordinary Arab Hall with its golden dome, intricate mosaics and walls lined with beautiful Islamic tiles was considered a perfect representation of Victorian Orientalism.

The concert will feature Baha Yetkin on the Oud who studied under world famous oud players Mehmet Emin Bitmez, Yurdal Tokcan and Necati Çelik. He is the only Turkish style oud teacher and Turkish Classical Music Makam teacher in London.

Alexandros Koustas will play the Klasik Kemençe, Koustas is the principal violist of the English National Ballet Philharmonic and was recently appointed as a member of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

The musicians will provide contextual information and answer questions from the floor after the concert.
