RBS 6 Nations: England v France at Twickenham Stadium – 4th February 2017
It is amazing, what a difference a year can make, heading into 2016 England bowed out of the 2015 Rugby World Cup at the group stages and new head coach Eddie Jones sounded the changes.
But fast forward to the present day and England have won their last 14 games in a row, including the Grand Slam in the 2016 RBS 6 Nations.
Jones will be still looking for improvement and England will start strong favourites for the 2017 Six Nations.
In contrast, France enjoyed a mixed 2016, starting with the RBS 6 Nations that saw them open up with victories over Italy and Ireland before falling to three successive losses. They won one and lost one in the summer against Argentina before running both Australia and New Zealand close this autumn.
The French will be looking for improvement and consistency to challenge England in their first game of the Six Nations.

Premier League Football in London – January 2017
The first month of Premier League football in 2017 sees a number of interesting fixtures including some crucial London derbies.
Arsenal have had a steady start to the season but slipped up before Christmas to raise doubts about their title winning credentials, January fixtures against Crystal Palace, Burnley and Watford will offer easier tests but the Gunners need to keep up the pressure on the teams at the top. One team at the top, Chelsea have emerged as real title contenders with Conte’s men impressing with their teamwork and commitment, matches against Tottenham and Hull seem unlikely to stop Chelsea’s progress.
Tottenham are at last showing some of their form from last year but will be tested by a resurgent Chelsea and matches against Watford and West Brom.
West Ham’s poor start to the season has been a surprise and December at last bought some relief for West Ham manager Bilic with improved displays. Games against Man Utd and Crystal Palace will test the new resolve.
Watford and Crystal Palace have shown signs that they may struggle this year, Palace in particular have lost direction and replaced their manager. Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony at the Royal Festival Hall – 29th January 2017
Eighty years after they performed its premiere, the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra plays Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony. Known for its definitive performances of Russian repertoire, the orchestra presents an evening of national masterworks.
Founded in 1882, the St Petersburg Philharmonic premiered the first five Shostakovich symphonies, and is also closely associated with Prokofiev.
Shostakovich’s Symphony No.5 was conceived in an atmosphere of Communist control, and saw him apparently toeing the party line. But its light-hearted melodies hint at ambiguous depths, and many argue for an ironic interpretation of its joyous finale.
The St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra is joined by soloist Martha Argerich, who is acclaimed for her interpretation of Prokofiev’s virtuosic, tempestuous Piano Concerto No.3.
Performers
St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra
Yuri Temirkanov, conductor
Martha Argerich, piano
Repertoire
Sergey Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No.3
Dmitry Shostakovich: Symphony No.5 in D minor
Aram Khachaturian: Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia from Spartacus, Suite No.2
Aram Khachaturian: Dance of the Gaditanian Maidens and Victory of Spartacus from Spartacus, Suite No.1
