Remarkably it is 34 years since Howard Blake wrote the musical score for the animated film which premiered on Channel 4 to critical acclaim. It was 1993 when the Snowman stage show was bought to life by the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. The show was such a success that for the last 18 years, the classic story has become a Christmas treat for children of all ages at the Peacock Theatre.
The show closely follows the TV adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ story in which each scene reveals another aspect of “the boy’s” adventures with his frozen playmate.
The first half provides plenty of comic moments when the Snowman discovers some of the excitement of being alive in a strange world. Adventures with a motorcycle and a cast of woodland creatures ensue before the boy and the Snowman take flight to the musical accompaniment of the classic Walking in the Air.
The enjoyment continues in the second half of the show when the boy and the Snowman join a Christmas party full of festive characters including Father Christmas.
Part of the appeal of this show is the way that it brings Raymond Brigg’s timeless classic to life. Ruari Murchison’s imaginative set provides the background to a series of scenes in which the talented cast of dancers sparkled to the rousing music directed with plenty of Christmas spirit by Jeremy Young.
The Snowman at the Peacock Theatre has become pre-Christmas treat for thousands of children and there are few signs its popularity is waning. The costumes and sets introduce the children to a magical world that still casts its spell and provides a very different spirit of Xmas.
This matinee performance was full of children of all ages, however with a running time of an hour and an half with a 20 minute interval, it really is not particularly suitable for the under threes.
The Snowman is running at the Peacock Theatre from the 23rd November 2016 to the 1st January 2017
