A glittering revival of The Royal Opera’s production of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville with Henrik Nánási conducting a cast which includes Javier Camarena, Daniela Mack and Vito Priante.
The young Gioachino Rossini is said to have completed Il barbiere di Siviglia in just 13 days, he adapted Pierre-Augustin Beaumarchais’ play Le Barbier de Séville which also inspired Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. Since its 1816 premiere, Il barbiere di Siviglia had been a favourite with audiences around the world and Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s colourful and inventive production which premiered in 2005 still delights the Royal Opera House audiences.
Il barbiere di Siviglia has all the right ingredients for a fast moving comic opera with a forceful young woman, her lecherous guardian and a young noble suitor all plotting to get their particular rewards. The high energy score matches the drama from Figaro’s famous entrance aria ‘Largo al factotum’ to the frenzy of the Act I finale.
The story centres around Count Almaviva and Rosina who is due to be married to her guardian Bartolo, the Count enlists the help of the cunning barber Figaro to win her hand.
Almaviva and Rosina fall in love, and Rosina turns her mind to duping Bartolo. The combined conniving of all three is too much for Bartolo, who has to admit defeat when he discovers Almaviva and Rosina have married right under his nose.
The performance lasts about 3 hour 30 minutes, including one interval
Sung in Italian with English surtitles
