Così fan tutte at the Royal Opera House – 22nd September to 19th October 2016

Acclaimed conductor Semyon Bychkov leads a cast of young and up-and-coming talent including American soprano Corinne Winters in a new production of Mozart ’s opera.

Così fan tutte was Mozart’s third and final collaboration with the librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, following Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni. The initial reception for the opera was mixed and was even considered immoral, it is now one of the most popular operas in the repertory including favourites, such as ‘Soave sia il vento’ and the arias ‘Come scoglio’, ‘Tradito, schernito’ and ‘È amore un ladroncello’.

German director Jan Philipp Gloger makes his Royal Opera debut with this new production of Così fan tutte, following such previous credits as Der fliegende Holländer for the Bayreuth Festival and Der Rosenkavalier for Dutch National Opera.

Love sits at the centre of the story with Ferrando who loves Dorabella and Guglielmo who loves Fiordiligi , their friend Don Alfonso is not so easily enamoured by love and offers the young men a bet. He believes that given the opportunity, their loves will prove unfaithful in less than a day.

The men pretend to be called away to war, only to return in disguise: each begins to woo the other’s lover. It quickly becomes clear that the feelings of all four lovers are much more complicated than any of them had thought.

Running times

The performance lasts around 3 hours 15 minutes, including one interval.

Sung in Italian with English surtitles
