The acclaimed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater make their highly anticipated return to Sadler’s Wells with three programmes of dance. Celebrating nearly 60 years of dance artistry, Ailey’s trademark technical brilliance and passionate energy is still as strong as ever.

Features Exodus, a highly-anticipated UK premiere that explores the idea of “exodus” as a necessary step toward enlightenment. This is followed by Ronald K. Brown’s Four Corners, where 11 dancers depict spiritual seekers amid four angels standing on the corners of the earth, holding the four winds. Audiences are then treated to Christopher Wheeldon’s After the Rain Pas de Deux, before the legendary Revelations – the most seen modern dance work in the world.

Programme B: Open Door / Piazzolla Caldera / Revelations

Wed 7, Fri 9, Sat 10, Thu 15 at 7.30pm, Sat 17 at 2.30pm

Features Ronald K. Brown’s Open Door, set to recordings by Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, and Paul Taylor’s Piazzolla Caldera: a sensual exposé of tango as reinterpreted and reimagined with modern dance. Concluding the evening is Ailey’s legendary Revelations – more than just a popular dance work, it has become a cultural treasure.

Programme C: Lift / Awakening / Cry / Revelations

Tue 13 & Fri 16 at 7.30pm, Sat 10 at 2.30pm

Features Aszure Barton’s exhilarating new work LIFT, created over a developmental process with the entire Company. This is followed by Robert Battle’s Awakening, a dance that expertly balances chaos and resolution, dissonance and harmony. Next, audiences will experience Cry: Alvin Ailey’s signature solo, originally choreographed as a birthday present for his mother. Concluding the programme is the legendary Revelations.

Programme D: Schools Matinee. Night Creatures excerpt / Revelations and narration by a dancer

Thu 15 at 1.30pm

Features an excerpt from Night Creature, Alvin Ailey’s bubbly champagne cocktail of a dance. Concluding the matinee is Ailey’s legendary Revelations – the most seen modern dance work in the world.
