Rugby League Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium – 27th August 2016

Leeds Rhino’s recent dominance of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup will be tested by other Rugby League clubs  in this season’s tournament!

Following a fifteen year wait to lift the trophy and six final defeats the Rhinos broke their hoodoo in 2014 when they overcame Castleford Tigers 23-10 at Wembley Stadium, the team repeated the feat last season, this time beating Hull Kingston Rovers in the final.

The Challenge Cup is Rugby League’s most historic and prestigious competition and is unusual being a knock-out tournament of its kind to include teams from all levels of the sport. Local community teams, student and the armed forces all compete alongside the elite of Super League.

First played in 1897, the Challenge Cup’s history and tradition is an important part of its appeal, perhaps more surprising for a mainly Northern based sport is that since 1929 the Final has been played in the south at Wembley Stadium.

However for many Northern Rugby League fans, the trip to Wembley is considered a sort of ‘pilgrimage ‘ and considered one of the must see events.

Wigan Warriors are the most successful club in the history of the competition, winning the Cup a record 19 times.

Whilst the appeal of Rugby League outside of the north is fairly limited, the final itself has been an important part of the sporting calendar and is broadcast to a number of countries around the world.

Although always well attended , in recent years it has generally been possible for neutrals to get a ticket to watch the final.
