The traditional curtain raiser to the new football season sees last year’s surprise Premier League champions Leicester City take on FA Cup winners Manchester United in the FA Community Shield on 7 August 2016.
The Football Association Community Shield (formerly the Charity Shield) is English football’s annual match contested between the champions of the previous Premier League season and the holders of the FA Cup at Wembley Stadium. If the Premier League champions also won the FA Cup then the league runners-up provide the opposition.
The origins of the Community Shield go back to 1889, however it was previously known as the Charity Shield between 1908 and 2002. It has undergone a number of change of formats in that time, but since the 1970s has generally been a match between the winners of the League and the FA Cup winners.
The match organised by the Football Association uses the proceeds from the game to distributed to community-based initiatives and charities around the country. Revenue from the gate receipts and match programme sales is distributed to the 124 clubs who competed in The FA Cup from the First Round onwards, for onward distribution to charities and projects of their choice, while the remainder is distributed to the FA’s national charity partners.
Played before the start of the season it is usually popular with fans and when the top teams play it can be very difficult to obtain tickets.
Kick Off: 16:00hrs
Leicester City – East
Manchester United – West
No tickets will be sold by The FA or Wembley Stadium. All general admission tickets including accessible tickets will be sold by the competing clubs.
