Review: Vitality London 10,000 in Central London – 30th May 2016

Under grey skies, Green Park was full of thousands of runners and supporters waiting for the start of the Vitality London 10,000. After the excitement of the Vitality Westminster Mile yesterday when one of the highlights was David Weir breaking the three-minute mile barrier, it was the turn of over 12,000 runners to attempt the Vitality London 10,000.

The race is one of Britain’s most iconic 10km race, which starts on The Mall and takes in some of London’s most famous landmarks before finishing in front of Buckingham Palace.

Showing no ill effects from his world record victory yesterday, David Weir finished in front of Ernst van Dyk and Rafa Botello-Jiminez in the first elite wheelchair race to be staged as part of the event. The elite women’s wheelchair race was won by Shelly Woods.

There was a small surprise in 10km race which incorporates the British 10k Road Race Championships when Andrew Butchart beat Andy Vernon who was going for his third successive victory in this event and Ben Connor who finished third. The margin of the victory will put Butchart in a strong position to win a place on the Great Britain team for the Rio Olympic Games.

In the women’s race, the late withdrawal from Jo Pavey allowed other runners to take the limelight. Lily Partridge ran a new personal best of 33:03 to beat Rachel Felton (33:35) into second, while Hannah Walker was third.

Away from the running, there has been over the weekend, the Vitality Wellness Festival in Green Park with free fun and entertainment for all ages. There is a sports area with freestyle football, sprint track athletics and BMX bikes.

Also in the park was inflatable games, music on the Bandstand, a kids’ zone, exercise classes including yoga and pilates in the Vitality Studio.

With the finish in front of Buckingham Palace, the event offers a spectacular weekend of running and is part of a series of running events that allow professionals and amateurs to test themselves over a variety of distances. There is also plenty of interest for non runners who can watch the race and enjoy the free Vitality Wellness Festival in Green Park.
