Exhibition Review : Heart and Soul by Gary Hodges at the Mall Galleries – 19th to 23rd April 2016



The Mall Galleries is the location of a free exhibition entitled Heart & Soul which presents the work of Gary Hodges who is the UK’s best selling and one of the most collectible pencil artist in the world.

Gary Hodges will be showing around 160 of his wildlife drawings in his first solo exhibition in 22 years entitled Heart & Soul which will be in aid of the Born Free Foundation and the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA).


The artist’s limited edition prints are in demand from collectors around the world and he is a member of the prestigious Society of Wildlife Artists, has won the WWF fine art award on two occasions and has been the subject of two television documentaries shown on the National Geographic and Discovery channels.


At the preview of the exhibition, Gary was joined by Virginia McKenna OBE, co-founder of the Born Free Foundation and a number of celebrity supporters to highlight some of wildlife causes that will benefit from the sale of some of the drawings and prints. The artist’s love of wildlife leads him to uses his talent to help protect wildlife, he has in recent years raised over half a million pounds with the sale of his drawings and prints.


Walking around the exhibition allows visitors to understand why Gary Hodges is considered one of the best pencil artist in the world, his extraordinary technical expertise is matched by the way he manages to capture the essential character of the animals. Appropriately the exhibition features a drawing of George Adamson who behind the original Born Free story with a couple of lions.


 The free exhibition will give visitors the opportunity to buy some of Gary’s artwork from the Heart & Soul ranges starting from just £24 for a limited edition signed print, up to many thousands of pounds for one of his rare original drawings. As an added bonus, you can chat to the artist himself who will be at the gallery from 12 noon to 3pm each day .


Visitors will be able to support the worthy causes by taking part in a silent auction for lots that include 6 original drawings and around 40 older rare prints like Lion, Emperor Penguins and tall Cheetah. To make them truly unique and very collectable, Gary will make the silent auction prints different from the ‘usual’ editions. He will embellish them, adding many more pencil marks and transform them into something akin to an original drawing. Most of these prints are also special numbers, either first or last in the edition. Each one will also be co-signed by various celebrities adding further still to their value.


There will also be a commemorative book which will be published in an edition of just 1,000 signed and numbered copies especially for the show. Lavishly illustrated with every drawing/print featured in the exhibition, copies of the 146 paged book will be available for £35.
