A Short Guide to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show at the Royal Hospital Chelsea – 24th to 28th May 2016

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) will celebrate the 90th birthday of HM The Queen with floral arches at both the Bull Ring and London Gate entrances to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (24 – 28 May). The primary arch, by leading designer Shane Connolly, will span the iconic Bull Ring gate entrance, situated on the bank of the river Thames, while its sister arch will welcome visitors to the London Gate.

Award-winning artist Joseph Massie provides another unique floral display for 2016. ‘Rosa’, a hanging installation beneath the Rock Bank restaurant, that connects Main Avenue and Ranalegh Way, will offer a sensory, immersive experience, and will feature over five thousand fresh rose blooms.

Other highlights include a new English shrub rose, ‘Roald Dahl’, which is named in honour of the world’s number one storyteller and marks 100 years since his birth as part of the official Roald Dahl 100 celebrations. The ‘Princess Charlotte’ chrysanthemum by Deliflor is launching in honour of the royal baby. Other new plants include Acer ‘Moonrise’ by Hillier Nurseries, hosta ‘Smiling Mouse’ by Hogarth Hostas, vibrant and deep red ‘Cherry Kiss’ by Millais Nurseries.

Gardens celebrating the connection between Health, Happiness and Horticulture include ‘Urban Connections’, a new Fresh Garden for the Victoria Business Improvement District, by design duo Lee Bestall and Paul Robinson highlights the growing issue of elderly isolation and showcases the role that high quality public spaces play in bringing communities and generations together.

Other exhibits that follow this theme include RHS Ambassador Jekka McVicar’s ‘A Modern Apothecary’ which champions the healing power of herbs, Chris Beardshaw’s collaboration with Great Ormand Street Hospital and ‘The Garden Bed’ by Alison Doxey and Stephen Welch.

RHS Chelsea introduces some plenty of interest with some high profile gardens, , the ‘Harrods Eccentric British Garden’ designed by Diarmuid Gavin, leading designer Peter Eustance has created a Artisan garden for disability charity Papworth Trust. Inspired by world renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie and the ‘sea music’ produced by the women of the Vanuatu islands, Other dramatic elements at the show include giant jagged bronze fins representing an ancient mountain range in The Daily Telegraph’s garden, by Andy Sturgeon and a 2.5m granite cube, which contains a garden, representing a world inside out by Martin Cook and Gary Breeze.

If you are interested in attending the show, it is important that you understand  a number of restrictions.

• Tuesday and Wednesday are members-only days
• All tickets must be booked in advance
• No children under 5 or babes in arms admitted. Children 5 years+ pay full price

BBC Good Food Stage

The BBC Good Food Stage will be hosted by Barney Desmazery and Cassie Best from the BBC Good Food cookery team, this stage features a combination of celebrity interviews, recipe demos and panel discussions on diverse health topics and the latest food trends. Guests include magazine contributors Sabrina Ghayour and Jose Pizarro alongside TV stars Paul Hollywood and John Torode, as well as best selling authors including Hemsley + Hemsley, Davina McCall and newcomer Olivia Wollenberg of Livia’s Kitchen.

Photo London at Somerset House – 19th to 22nd May 2016

Photo London brings together 80 of the world’s leading galleries in one of the major international photography fairs. Photo London runs for four days at Somerset House and visitors will be able to visit the main fair of 80 of the world’s leading galleries, gain access to major publishers, book signings, special installations and entry to three major exhibitions.

Highlights include :

Don McCullin: Photo London Master of Photography 2016

This exhibitions will honour the work of legendary war photographer, Don McCullin, recently named as the Photo London Master of Photography 2016. Visitors to Photo London will have a rare opportunity to hear Don McCullin speak in a public conversation at Somerset House with Tate Photography Curator, Simon Baker on Thursday 19 May 2016.

At the Embankment Galleries at Somerset House there will be an exhibition by Turner Prize nominated artist Craigie Horsfield .  The Wilson Centre is the private collection of Michael G. Wilson OBE. The Centre loans photographs to museums throughout the world and is delighted to be exhibiting a selection of Horsfield’s photographs from the collection.

Sergei Chilikov: Photoprovocation, from the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow

The celebrated Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow (formerly Moscow House of Photography) is the only museum in Russia to have a specialised programme of festivals and projects. Olga Sviblova, its Director, will curate a special exhibition for Photo London at Somerset House of contemporary Russian photography from Sergei Chilikov.

London Wonderground Festival at the Southbank – 5th May to 25th September 2016

The London Wonderground Festival returns for a fifth year in 2016 and features the best in cabaret, circus, comedy, music and kids’ shows. It all takes place in the distinctive 1920s-style Spiegeltent surrounded by indoor and outdoor bars, food, a bandstand, fairground rides and sideshows.

Headlining London Wonderground in 2016 is Cirque Alfonse’s Barbu, following their hit Southbank Centre production of Timber, this is cabaret as you’ve never seen it before

London Craft Week – 3rd to 7th May 2016

London Craft Week returns bigger and better with a programme of over 130 events across the city, featuring hidden workshops and unknown makers alongside celebrated masters, famous studios, galleries, shops and luxury brands.

The highly successful first London Craft Week held last year had 20,000 visitors and a cast including HRH The Prince of Wales, Grayson Perry and 350 makers.  The week allows visitors to meet and talk to some of the world’s most respected makers and artists. Visitors will see world-class fragrances being developed scent by scent, diamonds being cut & polished, porcelain being hand painted, silver being shaped, glass being blown and Chinese calligraphy being performed live. All against the backdrop of London in locations as diverse as Selfridges to Chelsea Physic Garden.

The London Craft Week 2016 programme is held at venues including museums and galleries, studios and workshop spaces, as well as shops and luxury brands.

About half of the events are free to attend and open house so no need to book. Other events need pre-booking at the Craft Week website.

The London Motor Show at Battersea Evolution – 6th to 8th May 2016

The London Motor Show will be arriving at Battersea Evolution from the 5th- 8th May to showcase more than 40 car brands and 130 models to visitors from around the world. Cars prices range from £8,000 to in excess of £200,000 with some models being seen in the UK for the first time.

Alongside dealerships representing manufacturers such as Volvo, Vauxhall, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and MINI, visitors will also have access to a selection of innovative cars such as; the Riversimple RASA, the VUHL 05 Lightweight Supercar, the MG GS and many more…

Other than the cars, there will be plenty to entertain visitors, the lecture theatre will play host to a line-up of speakers including Sir Stirling Moss, Tiff Needell, Ben Collins, Nigel Mansell and Afzal Kahn.

Visitors can see the full size model and meet the team behind The BLOODHOUND Project a global Engineering Adventure, using a 1000mph world land speed record attempt to inspire the next generation to enjoy, explore and get involved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. At the other end of the spectrum, one of the most iconic historic cars at the show is The Bluebird, a 1920 350hp Sunbeam.

There will also be a TOP GEAR simulator and a chance to play the Project CARS racing game using a VR (Virtual Reality) headset.

The London Motor show has plenty of food and drink options including Big Al’s Roadside Cafe, with airsteam trailers providing delicious cooked food, the Smart Restaurant on the mezzanine level will provide a more formal setting with high class catering from top chefs.

Friday 6th May: 10.00am – 6.00pm

Saturday 7th May: 10.00am – 6.00pm

Sunday 8th May: 10.00am-5.00pm.

The general early bird admission ticket is £15 from 6th-8th May and children under 10 go free. On the door ticket price is £20.

Leif Ove Andsnes at the Barbican – 8th May 2016

LSO Principal Guest Conductor Daniel Harding leads the LSO in Bruckner’s Third Symphony, the work which marked a major artistic breakthrough for the Austrian composer.Bruckner dedicated his third symphony to fellow composer Wagner who was his great inspiration.

Acclaimed Norwegian pianist  Leif Ove Andsnes ‘came very late’ to Mozart’s piano concertos: ‘I somehow was not mature enough to enjoy this music fully … now it is the greatest joy to play.’ Mozart’s gift, unmatched by anyone since, was to make music of exquisite beauty and craftsmanship appear effortless; but so much lies underneath the trademark serene simplicity.
