Spring will truly have arrived with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) London Spring Plant Extravaganza, featuring the RHS London Orchid Show (1-2 April).
For the first time in the Lawrence Hall, three floors will cater to the visitors horticulture needs, with a shopping and a marketplace on the top floor, a ‘Plant of the Extravaganza’ display on the ground floor showing each nursery’s ‘best plant’ choice, alongside a description highlighting why they love it so much, and a lower level ‘talks’ area offering tips and expert advice
One of the highlights of the show the opportunity to see an installation by the 2016 RHS Young Designers of the Year finalists ahead of the competition at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park in July. The official show garden will be an office space within a garden setting and aims to highlight the benefits of horticulture to health and happiness in the working environment.
Across both RHS Horticultural Halls (Lawrence and Lindley) the show will feature a variety of floral displays from 30 leading nurseries, trade-stands selling gardening products and talks including RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal-winning designer Mary Reynolds who will launch her new book ‘The Garden Awakening’.
The RHS London Orchid Show, in the Lindley Hall is one of the highlights of the year with colourful displays from professional growers, including orchid societies and botanical gardens from around the world. The brightly coloured miniature Dendrobium cutherbertsonii, originating from the high altitude cloud forests of Papua New Guinea, will feature at the show with shades of orange, red, pink and yellow. Its bright cousin, the black orchid Liparis nigra will also be on display, with deep, contrasting red, almost black flowers, traditionally grown in deep shade near streams in Thailand and Vietnam.
Visitors will be able to find out more about the remarkable history of orchids and attend a full programme of Orchid related talks.
To get the show off to entertaining start, there will be a Preview Evening (Thursday 31 March) when visitors can experience the show and then relax with a selection of food and drink with live Gypsy jazz music from Cordes en Bleues.
