The Whitgift Exhibition Centre tells the story of a pivotal year of the War in their exhibition entitled Remembering 1916 – Life on the Western Front . The exhibition will feature more than 600 original objects, many from private collections and never before displayed in public.

Highlights of the exhibition include :

New display and research into the flights and ‘kills’ of the Red Baron

Wealth of unseen original artefacts, including original sign from Verdun railway station,

rare edition of The Wipers Times trench newspaper and German field wagon.

HMP25 (Large) - Fijian by Eugene Burnand

Art work includes a set of pastel portraits of Allied soldiers by Swiss artist, Eugene Burnand; a series of hard-hitting graphic political cartoons by Dutch artist, Louis Raemaekers; examples of work by the ‘soldiers’ cartoonist’, Bruce Bairnsfather; and a selection of iconic recruitment posters.

Detailed atmospheric recreations of a bombed-out cellar at Verdun, the British and German trenches at the Somme, and contemporary home life.

Remembering 1916 also reveals a sequence of previously untold stories of individuals, on both the Western and Home fronts; ordinary people with extraordinary lives.

The Exhibition runs from 12 March-31 August 2016 at the Whitgift Exhibition Centre at Whitgift School, Croydon. CR2 6YT
