Norma at the London Coliseum – 17th February to 11th March 2016

Norma

Norma is one of Vincenzo Bellini’s best known opera’s and was first produced at La Scala in 1831.

The title role is considered one of the most difficult in the opera repertory. Part of the difficulty of the role is the great vocal control as well as needing a wide range of emotions. Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland both excelled in the role in the 20th century.

Award-winning director Christopher Alden returns to ENO for their first-ever production of Bellini’s masterpiece. Celebrated for its  melodies and arias, Norma is considered one of the great opera’s of the 19th century.

The story centres around a close-knit community’s whose way of life is threatened. The people want war. Their priestess Norma, secretly in love with one of the enemy, resists. But now he has a new love. And in the face of his betrayal, it seems Norma is prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice.

This critically acclaimed production sets the action in a rural community in the mid-19th century. Rising star soprano Marjorie Owens sings the demanding title role, alongside Peter Auty as the love-rat Pollione who cheats on her. Bel canto specialist Stephen Lord conducts.
