Review : Sampled at Sadler’s Wells – 29th January 2016

sampled reveiw

Since 2007, Sampled at Sadler’s Wells has given audiences the opportunity to experience world-class dancers across a broad spectrum of styles and this year is no different. Staging is minimal, to allow the audience to marvel fully at the spectacle of the human body pushing the boundaries of technical ability, art and creativity.

Sampled 2016 opens with a fluid yet angular new piece ‘Outlier’ by the Company Wayne McGregor, which was written for the New York City Ballet. The audience is then whisked away to Argentina where the inimitable Julia Hiriart Urruty and Claudio González stun the audience with sensual tangoes with a strong narrative of love and loss. Two BBC Young Dancer 2015 finalists perform works especially choreographed for them: Connor Scott impresses with the toe-tapping ‘Get Up’ which explores the modern themes of technology and anti-social behaviour and Vidya Patel brings elegance and grace to a North Indian Kathak dance, accompanied by live musicians.

A jaw-dropping combination of circus skills and contemporary dance is delivered by Les 7 Doigts de la Main/The 7 Fingers in a dream-like sequence. Finally, the Eindhoven b-boy crew ‘The Ruggeds’ have the audience gasping and cheering as if watching an electrifying fireworks display.

A video before each performance give insights into the creative process and dancers speak about how they draw energy from a live audience. This makes Sampled a very accessible show that would be as breathtaking for a newcomer to dance as an aficionado.
