London International Mime Festival has a long and distinguished history since it was created in 1977. It was founded by Joseph Seelig and mime/clown, Nola Rae to showcase the work of British visual theatre artists, many better known abroad than in their own country.
The Festival programme spans the spectrum of wordless performance including live art, physical theatre, new circus, puppetry and object theatre. LIMF’16, now entering its 40th year of innovative and contemporary Mime, the festival offers 29 days of epic, physical and visual theatre, films, workshops and discussions.
Some highlights of the programme include Complicite original members, Jos Houben and Marcello Magni, in their new show, Marcel produced by the famous Théâtre Bouffes du Nord theatre in Paris.
Circus and contemporary dance collide with dizzying effect in Yoann Bourgeois’ He Who Falls, and spectacular acrobatics meet opera in Circa’s The Return. Other festival debutants include Belgium’s Alexander Vantournhout, Stereoptik from France, and Britain’s The Wrong Crowd with its delightful tale about a handmade kite that comes to life.
There’s a mini-season of micro-theatre with Catalan artists at Tate Modern and Southbank Centre, and magical marionettism from Figurentheater Tubingen at the Barbican. UK contemporary circus leader, Ockham’s Razor, premieres its most ambitious creation yet; mask theatre fans get world class fare with Vamos and Familie Floez, while Jakop Ahlbom’s large-scale horror movie hommage guarantees white knuckles and laughter at The Peacock.
Seventeen of the eighteen productions will be UK or London premieres; Jos Houben’s The Art of Laughter returns by popular demand.
