Review : Chestertons Polo in the Park at Hurlingham Park – 6th June 2015

Warm sunshine welcomed the large crowds that descended on Hurlingham Park for the Chestertons Polo in the Park Ladies Day.

The picturesque Hurlingham Park is intrinsically linked to the playing of Polo in England, the game was established here in 1874. Before the Second World War it was the headquarters of Polo and the scene of numerous major competitions.History was made yesterday when the England Polo team  competed against  Air Europa South America in the first England International match at Hurlingham for 76 years.

Since 2009, when Polo returned to Hurlingham, the Polo in the Park event has grown into one of the more unusual London summertime events.  The blend of top class Polo and social event has become very popular, so much so  today’s event was sold out.

The event is quite informal, however many spectators take the opportunity to dress up a little, although smart casual is the accepted dress code. There are plenty of bars selling a variety of drinks including champagne, Pimm’s and cocktails. Food outlets offer a wide range of choice and there is a shopping village offering a variety of products.

However, for all the pleasant social aspects, it is the Polo that provides plenty of excitement. Due to the size of the park, Chestertons Polo in the Park has simplified the traditional rules of Polo with only three players on each side rather than the traditional four and explanations are given to enable newcomers to follow the action without any prior knowledge of the game. There are Polo matches every day with the Finals played on the Sunday.

Whilst the event caters for the adults, it also features a number of events and attractions for the children  most notably the  ‘Pitch Invasion’ on Sunday which is a children’s party.

If you are looking for a slightly different London experience, Polo in the Park offers an opportunity  in which to have food and drink in pleasant surroundings watching horses and riders in competition. The finals day is Sunday 7th June when the finals will be played and trophies presented.
