Royal Opera House : Manon, 30 September—1 November 2014

manao

Kenneth MacMillan’s acclaimed tragic ballet is considered a modern masterpiece since its premiere in 1974. Based  on the 18th-century French novel by Abbé Prévost, the story had already been adapted twice for opera by Massenet and Puccini.

MacMillan bought a new sympathy for the ill fated Manon as she traverses poverty and luxury in Paris and New Orleans.

manon 2

But it is Manon and Des Grieux’s  pas de deux  that illuminate this tragic story, and make Manon one of MacMillan’s most acclaimed dramas.

Running time

The performance lasts about 2 hours and 45 minutes, including two intervals.

Royal Opera House : Frederick Ashton Mixed Bill ,18 October—12 November 2014

mixed bill
The Royal Ballet celebrates its Founder Choreographer, Frederick Ashton, with a mixed programme of some of his finest works

mixed bill2

Scènes de ballet radiates sophisticated elegance in its setting of Stravinsky’s witty and energetic neoclassical score. Five Brahms Waltzes in the Manner of Isadora Duncan is an impassioned and distinctive homage to the American dancer who was one of Ashton’s guiding influences. Symphonic Variations is a cornerstone in the Ashton style, rejoicing in graceful purity of line and movement. And A Month in the Country, one of Ashton’s last works, is his poignant dramatic masterpiece, perfectly capturing the elegiac mood of Turgenev’s play in an all-Chopin score.

Running time

The performance lasts about 2 hours and 45 minutes, including two intervals.

Royal Opera House : I due Foscari, 14 October—2 November 2014

forscari2

Verdi’s sixth opera explores family and corruption in Venice, it is considered one of his darkest and tragic works.  Yet despite the opera’s tragedy, the music for I due Foscari contains a wonderful part for heroine Lucrezia with her magnificent duets with the Doge in Act I and with her doomed husband in Act II.

forscari

American director Thaddeus Strassberger, making his Royal Opera debut, depicts a Venice that is rotten to its core. Mattie Ullrich’s opulent costume designs reference the opera’s 15th-century setting while suggesting the corruption lurking beneath. The spare sets of award-winning British designer Kevin Knight illustrate the Foscaris’ isolation and the decay of the city, before flaring out into grand guignol for the opera’s brilliant Act III carnival.
Running time

The performance lasts about 2 hours 35 minutes, including one interval

Language

Sung in Italian with English surtitles

golden west
Puccini’s The Girl of the Golden West (La fanciulla del West) is his ‘American opera’,  set in the American Wild West during the Californian gold rush.

Internationally acclaimed soprano Susan Bullock, celebrated for her Wagner, Strauss and Puccini roles, returns to ENO to sing Minnie, alongside baritone Craig Colclough and tenor Peter Auty. Already well-established throughout Europe, including engagements at the Torre del Lace Puccini Festival, conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson makes her UK operatic debut.

The Girl of the Golden West is sung and surtitled in English | Running time: 2hrs 35mins
